I require your assitance!

Normal commission for salesman is not normally high correct? And there is usually a salary attached to that as well right?

I was offered a sales position with a $250 weekly salary and 15% commission for a month, after a month the commission bumps to 25% but the salary goes away. How does that sound to you?

what is your net sales per week? Take 25% of that and see if you like it.

what are you selling?

what happens when people are not buying stuff?

Not a good sign that they can’t tell you what the average person sells. Big/brand backed dealer or no?

not a big branded dealer. Independently owned and operated.

I’m assuming they didn’t want to say “Hey, yeah some guys don’t sell shit here so your paychecks won’t look great every now and then. Meanwhile, the guy over there rolls in money”

In 2002 I had a base $200 weekly (if I sold 10-17 cars per month, 22+ got you $400 for the following month) and 20-30% margin (20% on Toyota and Used, 30% on Hummer sales) So it sounds about standard except, car sales had higher profits in them then. Ask about pack and what you are paid on flats. That’s huge for your pay check.

It’s a hard life. I did it for 5 years, learned my lessons, finished my college degree and got the hell out.

I would see if you can chat up some of the other guys. “Is this a good gig?” “Are you happy here?” etc...

I got there early enough to avoid going straight to the managers office. No one (i asked 3 of them) there complained about the environment or pay, and the newest guy has already been there 3 years.

That’s a good sign. Turn over is usually high at dealerships.

One thing you need to know is how they calculate commission. You might think it’s a straight forward calculation, but you would be surprised at the different ways car companies use to reduce your commission.

When I first started I just assumed it was x% of the profit over how much they had into the car, but not true. There is dealer holdback, subtract costs for prep, repairs, transfer fees. Just know what you are getting into.
